Adapted from an anonymous graphite engraving showing the first manned hydrogen gas balloon flight descending on the plain of Nesle, near Beaumont, France. The 'Aerostatic globe' balloon belonging to and carrying Jacques Charles and Marie-Noel Robert departed from Paris, France on December 1, 1783. Among the spectators in left foreground are the Duke de Chartres and the Duke de Fitz-James. |
